PICTURE BOOKS:.
1. The Skeleton Inside You By: Philip Balestrino - This is a great book
to use when doing a lesson on the skeletal system. It gives great examples of what our body would be like without bones. It
gives great details such as how many bones we have in our body and what they look like. The only thing that you might want
to look out for is that it talks about Halloween, so be careful about that.
2. The Mine-O-Saur By: Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen – Sharing and not being
selfish is what this book is about. It uses dinosaurs to bring in those who love dinosaurs. It shows how when you always say
“mine” no one wants to be your friend, but once you start to share, everyone want to be your friend.
3. My Doctor By: Harlow Rockwell – This book talks all about a doctor’s
office. It tells of what is in the office and what happens when you go. It shows children that the doctor’s office is
not scary!
4. Hands at Work By: Freya Purdey – This book gives pictures of different
people doing different jobs and asks, “Who is at work?” When talking about different occupations there are , this
would be a great book to use.
5. Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? By: Bill Martin Jr.- This is a book all about
different animals. Kids love this book because after several times of reading this book they know what animal is coming up.
For a child just learning to read this is a great book to have because it is easy, but good.
6. If You’re Happy and You Know It By: Pamela Susan – Just like the song,
kids are able to choose this book to read and sing at the same time. Little children love it and can read it because they
know the song.
7. Mama,
Do You Love Me By: Barbra Joose – The characters are from Alaska (Inuit Tribe) and it is based on a child and a
mom. The child asks her mom if she were to do something would her mom still love her. Cute, cute book.
8. Animal Babies in Polar Land By: Jennifer Schofield – Such a quit
book on animal babies and what they look like when they are little and what their mom looks like because she is bigger.
9. Please, Baby, Please By: Spike and Tanya Lee –My students at the pre school
absolutely love this book! This is by far their favorite. It is about an African American girl and her mom and all the naughty
things little kids do. The mama is always telling the baby “NO baby please baby.” Cute ending!
10. The Cow Who Clucked By: Denise Fleming – This book is great. It is about a cow
that loses his moo. It goes through all different types of animals and the sounds that they make. Finally the cow finds his
moo!
11. I am a Little Elephant By: Francois Crozat –This is a cute story about a baby
elephant and a mommy elephant and what all a mommy elephant does for her baby. There are many different animals mentioned
throughout the story which makes it fun for those who love animals.
12. David Smell By: David Shannon – This is a very short book about our five senses. It
gets straight to the point about what each sense is and what we might do, see, smell, feel, or hear with the five.
13. Hello, Red Fox Eric Carle – This is a very neat book about colors. It has all types of
animals and activities to so while reading the book (staring at the black dot then at the color changing). A fun book for
kids to explore.
14. The Tiny Tadpole By: Judith Nicholls - The life cycle of a tadpole to a frog is what this book
is about. It uses very descriptive words and has very good pictures. It is a touch and feel book, so it is very interactive
for all children. At the end it allows for the page to be pulled up making a huge frog.
15. I’ m a Little Teapot By: Iza Trapani – Just like the song “I’m
a Little Teapot” this book expands on the verses in the song. It takes children on an adventure to different places,
from bull fighting to outer space. This book is full of many different adventures.
16. There’s a Nightmare in My Closet By: Mercer Mayer – The only bad thing in this book
is that it says “I’ll shoot you,” But it is not with a real gun. This book is cute and turns something that
kids are so scared of “monsters in the closet into something fun and adorable.
17. The Crawly Caterpillar By: Judith Nicholls – The lifecycle of a caterpillar to a butterfly
is what this book is about. Another very interactive book that children can touch and feel. A must have when doing a lesson
on caterpillars and butterflies.
18. Curious George Visits a Toy Store By: Martha Weston – Who does not like Curious George?
This is a fun book to show how things might be bad, but can turn into something good.
19. Olivia’s Opposites By: Ian Falconer – A book all about opposites. Up and down,
open and closed… etc. Very short, but right to the point.
20. Beasty Bath By: Robert Neubedur- This is all about having an imagination. It is so fun and children
love it. It takes you back to your childhood.
21. Hide and Seek Under the Sea By:? – Hide and seek with sea creatures, how much fun!
Little kids love this book. Each sea creature has huge googly eyes and the fish is searching for the crab. So much fun!
22. There’s a Wocket in My Pocket By: Dr. Seuss – Rhyming lessons… this is the
book. Yes the creatures are not real names, but you see exactly how words rhyme and how they look when they rhyme. Anything
by Dr. Seuss is always great.
23. Please, Puppy Please. By: Spike and Tanya Lee – A book just like “Please, Baby, Please, but
the roles of the characters and what they do change. It is about a cute puppy who runs away, then has to get a bath and many
other things. Kids love it.
24. The Napping House By: Audrey Wood – One of my favorite
books of all times. Fun for anyone. Humorous, great illustrations. Received an award for best illustrated children book. A
must for everyone to read. A good book for students to add to the story or to predict what is going to happen.
25. A Fly Went By By: Mike McClintock – This is a great book to use for predictions or characters.
It has many different actions that students can choose what might happen next with many characters they could use. This is
a little long but very good to read.
26. Green Eggs and Ham By: Dr. Seuss – I can remember reading this book in grade school and getting
to try green eggs and ham. It was so much fun. It is also a good book to show children not to judge what something looks like
on the outside because it may be great on the inside, or once you try it.
27. Snow Bears By: Martin Waddell – Super cute book! It is about a mommy bear and her three cubs
pretending to be snow bears. A good book to have out during the winter time when there is snow on the ground. This is also
a great book to use when you are going to do role playing.
28. I’m the Best Artist in the Ocean. By: Kevin Sherry – This would be a great book for really
little kids. This is not a book that I would use with anyone older then pre-school. It really lost my attention really quick.
29. Fast Food By: Saxton Freymann
– A book with all illustration made out of vegetables. I love these books because they make me want to try and make
the illustrations myself using vegetables. This is a book I will share with my students.
30. My World By: Margaret Brown – This book was hard for me to understand. I had to read it
twice to even get the “somewhat” point of the story. This is a book I would NOT share with my students.
31. The Little Piggy’s Book of Manners By: Kathyrn Allen – A great book to use
when students do not know or are having a hard time with their manners. It gives great examples of what good manners are and
what bad manners are. It gives clear examples of what the differences are.
32. Bumblebee, Bumblebee, Do You Know Me? By: Anne Rockwell- A great book to use for introducing flowers
and different insects that go with each flower. It introduces many flowers and what each one looks like and what they might
do. I learned something from this book!
33. You’re My Honey, Funny Bunny By: Sally Doherty – A mommy bunny and her baby bunny
going to the park just like a mommy and her baby would do. They have a lot of fun during the day doing different things like
sliding, or having a picnic. This book is a snug and hug book so each page has soft things to touch and feel.
34. No More Diapers for Ducky By: Bernette Ford and Sam Williams – A great book to use for
a younger child, fixing or trying to be potty trained. It is about a pig going potty and the duck wanting to play. The pig
keeps saying that he can not play because he is going potty. The duck is still in a diaper and decides since his friend the
pig is going potty, he will kick his diaper off and begin to use the potty.
35. MY Monster Mama Loves Me By: Laure Leuck – This is a cute story about a mommy monster and her baby
and what all they do during the day. The monsters switch roles with the humans and do the same thing humans do but with monster
names.
36. Do’s and Don’ts By: Todd Parr – This nook would be used mostly for pre-school
children that are having difficulty following certain rules. It gives great examples of what is right and what is wrong and
what children should do and what they should not do.
37. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom By: Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault – A great book to
use for introducing your ABC’s. It is so much fun and the children love it. The ABC’s are climbing up a coconut
tree and trying to decide if all the letters can make it up the tree! The kids love to find each letter on the pages.
38. Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? By: Eric Carle and Bill Martin Jr. – Just like Baby
Bear, Baby Bear, children love this book. It introduces other animals, animals that children may not be familiar with and
keep children interested in the book to see what animal comes up next.
39. Tiny Tyrannosaurus and Her Fierce Teeth By: Paul Flemming- A very interactive about a dinosaur wanting
to scare everyone with her big teeth. She gets upset because no one gets scared, but her friends in the end show her what
her teeth are good for. They turn something bad into something good.
40. My Friend Rabbit By: Eric Rohmann- This book is a Caldecott medal winner. It has great pictures
with vibrant colors. It is a good book to use for prediction, or making up part of the story because some pages do not have
words.
41. Dog Food By: Saxton Freymann- This book is great! It is a book all about vegetables and
fruit cut out into different dog pictures. This would be a fun book to use to do arts and crafts and try to replicate what
was made in the book.
42. What I Like About You? By: Judy Reinen- An excellent book to use when talking about friends. I would use
this book as a hook to write a letter to someone special, because it gives great things to say to our friends. It also has
really cute pictures.
43. Friends Together By: M.J. Wagner- Short but sweet. Another great book to use when talking about
friends, but it is one that definitely needs to be used in kindergarten or lower.
44. I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More By: Karen Beaumont- Very great book, fun, good prediction, must be
read with a southern accent. It does not use proper English but it is so much fun.
45. Rosa By: Nikki
Giovanni – This is such a great book to use in a social studies unit when dealing with the rights and freedom of African
Americans and especially Rosa Parks. This is what the book is actually based; Rosa Parks and what happened when she refused
to give up her seat for white people
46. Cordurory By Don Freeman- Who could not love this book? This is one of the cutest books I have
ever read. It could be used for many different lessons ranging in all different subjects. This is a must to have in all classrooms.
47. My “a” Book By: Jane Belk Moncure- I can remember this book from when I was young. This is
a great book for a pre school or kindergarten class. When you are learning letters and there sounds this is a perfect book
to introduce the letter to your students.

49. Make Way for Duckling By: Robert McCloskey- The only color on this book is on the cover but the pictures
within the book although they are not colorful are very well drawn. It makes you focus more on the story which is very cute.
50. Wheels! By: Annie Cobb- This is for your student who loves trucks, cars, anything that has wheels.
This is defiantly an early reader book, no higher then kindergarten.
51. Who Am I? By: Nancy Christiansen – A book to get kids predicting what the animal at
the end of the book might be. There are also some great things to do at the back of the book.
52. Ollie Forgot By: Tedd Arnold- This is such a great book. I loved it. It is such a great story about
a little boy who forgets everything but remembers the last thing said to him. Throughout the whole book it gets him into trouble
until the last few pages.
53. I’m A Fire Fighter By: Mary Packard- A story about a
Fire Fighter saving the day. Young children are always so interested in Fire man and community leaders so this would be a
good book for early readers. This is defiantly a book for early readers.
54. Little White Dog By: Laura Godwin- A book of colors and searching for the animal lost within the
color. A book to use when introducing different colors.
55. My Crayons Talk By: Bill Martin- Another great book to use when introducing colors. It gives a
color and a certain object that goes with that color that children can identify with.
INFORMATIONAL:
1. The Incredible Journey Through
the Human Body By: Nicholas
Harris – A way to tunnel your way through the internal organs of the human body in a book. This book is very neat because
it has cut outs on almost every single page in the way in which our body is formed. This is a must when studying the human
body! Excellent book!
2. Horses By: Gallimard Jeunesse and Henri Galeron – If you have a student
who loves horses, or doing a unit or something on horses, this is the book for those things. It tells almost everything you
need to know about horses, all kinds of horses. It also has transparent pages which is fun for kids as well.
3. What Comes in a Shell? By: Susan Canizares and Betsey Chessen –
The title explains it all! This is a book about what comes in a shell, such as a crab, lobster, shrimp, and many other things.
This book would be a good book to have for a theme on the ocean.
4. Animal Shelters – This book talks all about animal shelters
and why animals need to take shelter. It talks about what animals live in what shelter. It is a great book to allow children
to discover some of the usual and unusual shelter animals use to protect them. A following activity that I would use with
this book is for students to create the shelter that they liked the most.
5. Monkeys and Apes By: Gallimard Jeunesse and James Pruiner –
This is a first discovery book which would be good to use on a introductory lesson to monkey and apes. It tells of all the
different types of monkeys and apes and what they do all day.
6. Animal Building Homes By: Wendy Perkins – Very informative
on different animals and how they build their homes. A great book to use on a lesson dealing with animals or different types
of animal homes. Very good pictures and very detailed explanations.
7. Jellyfish By: Elaine Landua – Beautiful, real, amazing pictures.
This book shows pictures deep in the ocean of jelly fish and their habitats. It tells everything one needs to know about a
jellyfish. Wow I learned so much from this awesome book.
8. The Cat in the Hat – Beginner
Dictionary By: The Cat himself
and P.D. Eastman – This is a must to have especially in the lower grades. It is a dictionary that gives picture presentations
of what each word is, fun pictures at that. It gives sentences which the word is used in. Very simple but a good source for
children to use.
9. Who Knew? By: Bob Strauss – The second that I opened this book
I knew I had to have it! It is a book full of different questions and answers to some questions that you might want to know
and questions that you would never think to ask. This is one of the greatest information books I have ever read.
10. Kittens & Cats By: Elizabeth Kaufman- All about kittens and cats. This
book is an excellent book to use when teaching about animals or if you just have a person in your class that loves cats, or
maybe one who wants to get a cat.
11. What Happens at the ZOO By: Judith Rinard- All about the Zoo and what
you can do! Any child that loves the zoo or animals of any type of animal this is the book for them. A great book to read
all together as a class as well.
12. Going Places By: Marttelli and Graham- This is a great book for learning
about places to travel to and what all one might see when they travel the world.
POETRY:
1. Oh, the Pets You Can Get! By: Trish Rabe – This is a great book for students who love animals and want a lot of pets. It explains what
different animals need if you take them home to be your pet and how much space they need and that they have to go to the vet.
2. Farmer Brown Shears His Sheep By: Tedi Sloat – Cute book about some sheep who get sheared and try and steal their wool back. They work really
hard to get it back, but if they would have just waited, the end surprise would have been worth the wait.
3. Where the Sidewalk Ends
By: Shel Silverstein – This was my favorite poetry book growing up and getting to revisit it was so awesome. This book
gives many great poems that children can explore and it will allow for me to share some of my favorite poems.
4. My Big Race By: Roger
Audette- Cars racing, words rhyming, colorful pictures, very good descriptive words. This book is fun for anyone who loves
cars or a lesson on rhyming.
5. Read Aloud Poems for Young People By: Many different authors- This is a great poetry book to have in the classroom because it gives students a wide
variety of different poems dealing with many different subjects of life.
6. I See the Moon: Good Night Poems and Lullabies Selected by: Marcus Pfister- These are great poems for young children to read at night. Cute poems from all different
life styles.
FOLKTALE:
1. The Three Little Wolves and the
Big Bad Pig By: Eugene Trivizas-
If you loved the The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, you will most definitely
love this book! It is such a great reversal to the original story. Also a good book to get the students involved during reading
because of the repletion of what the pig says!
2. The Runaway Tortilla In Texas, Tia Lupe and Tio Jose make the finest tortillas
- so light that the cowboys say they just might jump right out of the pan. One day, a tortilla does exactly that. The tortilla
runs through the desert, different animals but is finally outwitted by Senor Coyote in this flavorful twist on the classic
tale "The Gingerbread Man." Great book to use for prediction.
3. Cinderella’s Slipper (Collected) By: Emory L. Hamilton- A beautiful
story with such a happy ending. Quite a bit different from the Cinderella story but with a lot of the same plot. Cute, cute
story.
REALISTIC FICTION:
1.
Hoot By: Carl Hiassen- Such an incredible book Reading level is about 5th grade but a great book about never
giving up on something that you put your heart into. It leaves you wanting to know what happens in the end so it keeps you
interested to the very end of the book.
2. Because of Winn Dixie By: Kate DiCamillo –Such a great book along with a great movie. Great to use with students
4th through 7th grade! Read the book first then watch the movie and do a compare and contrast between
the two!

Freckle Juice By: Judy
Blume- This was one of my most favorite books in the 3rd grade. It goes so well with all people today! We have
so much, yet someone has something more that we want. A great book to read when students are having a hard time accepting
themselves the way they are.
4.
Second-Grade Friends By: Miriam Cohen- Oh the second grade, this is a book that all second graders should read. It
is the life of a second grader. This makes the second grade exciting.
GRAPHIC NOVEL:
1.
Erfworld
By: Rob Balder- A depressed, pudgy nerd who's obsessed with strategy games is zapped into an alternate fantasy world. It turns out
that he's been summoned there by a king, probably evil, who's searching for the ultimate strategist to command his troops
in their last stand against an army that's besieging them.
2. Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat: A
Calvin and Hobbes Collection By Bill Watterson The irrepressible and imaginative Calvin and his pet stuffed tiger, Hobbes, take part in death-defying battles with
aliens, meditate on the meaning of life, terrorize little Susie, and question parental authority.
3. Halo Graphic Novel By: Lee Hammock Marvel and Bungie team
up to create The Halo Graphic Novel HC based on the best-selling video game. The graphic novel brings the Halo universe to
life for the first time
HISTORICAL FICTION:
1. Little House in the Big Woods By: Laura Ingalls Wilder- This is the first
of many different books! I love to read the stories that she use to once live because I have always wanted to live back in
this time. This is a great book for young girls who love the older times.
2. Little House on the Prairie By: Laura Ingalls Wilder- This is the third
book in the series and this is where her and her family pack up and move into a conflicting place. Again great books mostly
for girls.
3. The Long Winter By: Laura Ingalls Wilder- This is probably the most exciting
of all the Wilder books that are out there. This one is based a lot on struggle and strength showing how hard times were back
in those times and how they never gave up! A great ending to the book.
4. Island of the Blue Dolphins By: Scott O’Dell- I could never imagine
the life that Karana lived and the survival skills that she had. This is a touching story and a story of strength for myself.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY/BIOGRAPHY:
1. MULTIPLE BLES8INGS By: Jon and Kate Gosselin and Beth Carson-
This book was read for my own pleasure. I love the television show Jon and Kate plus 8 and this is a book all about them and
their beautiful family. There are ten of them in all: Jon, Kate, Cara, Maddy, Joel, Collin, Aiden, Alexis, Leah, and Hannah.
They have a set of twins, Cara and Maddy, then sextuplets the last six names. They are an extraordinary family.
2. Babe Didrikson Zaharias: The Making of a Champion By: Russell Freedman- All about Zaharias and
the accomplishments of her life. She was an incredible women and this book shows them all.
3. Laura: The Life of Laura Ingalls Wilder By: Laura Ingalls Wilder- This is a book all about herself and the life
that she lived. My mom got me hooked on the Little House books and Laura herself.
FANTASY:
1. James and the Giant Peach By: Roald Dahl- This was another one of my favorite books
that I read over and over and over again, and I still have the book to this day. A great recommendation for all students who
love getting into the scenes of the book and pretending.
2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone By: J.K. Rowling- A very long book but such
a great story. I love books in series because you know that there is more to come after you get done ready (not that I have
read the rest of the books) Definitely for older children, but never discourage the younger ones to who want to read them.
3. The Chronicles of Narnia- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe By: C.S. Lewis- What a great book! It is safe for all children with many different
characters and plots within the book! A recommendation for all students.
4. Charlottes Web By: E.B. White- Oh Charlotte! Oh Wilbur! I
love this book and I always think, “who could not love this book”. It has so many great scenes and characters
and just an all around awesome moral to the story. Also has a great movie to go along with it.
5. The BFG By: Rohald Dahl- A book of great fantasy and imagination.
It really shows how incredible it is for our minds to wonder into our imaginations that we once had as a child. Imagination
is a wonderful thing.
6. The Summer I Shrank My Grandmother By: Elvira Woodruff- This is for all your
scientists in the class. It is a great book for anyone and leaves you wanting to read more.
7. The Indian in the Cupboard By: Lynne Reid Banks- It starts of with something
seeming so bad and turns into something so great. It helps kids look at something that they may see as horrible and look at
it good.
8. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory By Rohald Dahl- I love the movie and love
the book! It is about a boy, Charlie who has nothing, but has a lot of hope and passion. In the ends he ends up with more
then he could have every imagined.
SCIENCE FICTION:
1. THE EAR, THE EYE, AND THE ARM By: Farmer, Nancy- In 2194 Zimbabwe, General Matsika's three children are kidnapped and put to work in a
plastic mine, while three mutant detectives use their special powers to search for them.
2. TRIA AND THE GREAT STAR RESCUE By Rebecca Kraft Rector- In
this innovative tale of the virtual and reality, Tria finds herself torn from the safety of her pod and the companionship
of her hologram best friend Star. All children have trouble figuring out what to do with friends all the time.
3. Superman Returns : I am Superman! By: Brent H. Suddeth- This book has great illustrations to go along with the great story of good ole Superman. A great
book for younger boys and girls who love superman.
MANGA:
1. Fruits Basket By: Natsuki Takaya -Children who like comics
and like the way that you must read them will like these books. Note to self: Inappropriately dressed characters in my eyes.
But for that student who like these books this one is about Tohru wondering how she can break the curse of the Sohma family.
It is the 12th volume in the set.
2. Girl Got Game. Vol. 1 By: Shizuru.Seino A dream of a young girl to be a NBA star her dad does
all that he can to make that happen, to the extent of enrolling his daughter in school as a boy. This is the only sports manga
appealing to girls.
3. Girls Got Game Vol. 2 By: Shizuru Seino – This is the second part in the
volume of Girl Got Game and is a
great series for those girls who dream of being in the WNBA.
